The Cocora Valley lies north-east of Armenia, a short jeep ride above Salento, and is where Colombia’s national tree grows: the wax palm, the tallest palm in the world at up to about 60 metres. The tours on this page add a coffee farm and a stop in Salento, so the valley, the farm and the town fit into one day with transport arranged.

Private or shared, side by side

Neither listing names the coffee farm. The entrance to the wax palm area is included, lunch is not. What differs is who you share the day with, where you are picked up and how long it runs.

How the day runs

Both tours follow the same order. The valley comes first; the coffee farm and lunch follow, and the day ends in Salento. On the shared Ruta Xplorer tour reviewers describe a guided walk among the palms in the morning and the coffee tour with a second guide in the afternoon.

The private Gran Colombia tour picks you up in Armenia, Salento or Filandia and runs eight to ten hours, with your own guide setting the pace. Reviewers name its coffee farm as Luger. The shared tour starts in Salento, Pereira or Armenia, takes six to eight hours and includes insurance. Its return time is not fixed: reviewers mention a wait of about 45 minutes at the end of the day.

Doing it yourself instead

Willys jeeps leave the main square in Salento for the valley about every hour and take roughly half an hour; the last ones come back in the early evening. From the car park a half-day loop climbs through cloud forest to Finca Acaima and returns through the open valley with the palms (Wikivoyage). The farm tours around Salento can be booked separately and are compared on our Salento coffee farms page. Doing both on your own means two jeep rides to sort out, which is the part these tours take off your hands; lunch you pay for either way.

The route decides how much hiking there is

The palm area can be visited as an easy walk along the valley floor or as the longer loop through the forest. One reviewer of the private tour expected a hike and found a walk along farmland. If the trail itself matters to you, ask the operator before booking which route the guide takes.

What to pack for the valley

  • Shoes with grip for muddy trails and steep farm paths
  • A light rain jacket and a warm layer
  • Sun protection for the open stretches among the palms
  • Cash for snacks and souvenirs in Salento at the end of the day

Guests on the Cocora and coffee days

Guides get warm words on both tours. Two voices are more critical: one found the valley less of a hike than expected, and one shared-tour guest criticises the company’s organisation while praising the guide.

“What a fantastic day in Cocora Valley and having a wonderful coffee experience, followed by lunch in town. If you don’t have a lot of time in Salento, this tour lets you see the natural beauty of Cocora Valley and learn about coffee growing and production. …”

“We had a very good day thanks to our guide Sarah who was very kind and helpful to understand the history behind the Cocora Valley, Salento and Colombia in general !”

“Cocora Valley was a bit of a let down. Basically a walk not hike on the boarder of farm land”
Sharon · United Kingdom · Mar 2025 Cocora, Salento and coffee farm (private) · Gran Colombia Tours
“DISASTER - AVOID. The only reason this is not a one star review is because Eduardo was lovely and the walk in Cocora was very interesting. This review is about the company and not the guide. I have the impression that my experience was not unusual. …”
