Cartagena is Colombia’s most visited city and has no coffee farms nearby. By bus, Santa Marta is four to five and a half hours away depending on the service, with Minca 30 to 60 minutes further up, and Medellín around thirteen hours (Wikivoyage). What the city offers instead is a tasting: a cupping session where you compare coffees side by side, which fits into a beach stay or a day in port.

About this tour

Cartagena has no coffee farms nearby, so this is a cupping session in the city: three brewing methods and different flavour profiles, with a diploma at the end.

A good fit for a beach or cruise stop where a farm trip is out of reach.

What happens at the cupping

The session lasts about two hours and is run by In Cartagena for groups of up to ten. You taste Colombian specialty coffee prepared with three brewing methods and learn to tell different flavour profiles apart. At the end there is a diploma. One guest describes learning about the beans, their origins and flavour profiles and being shown various brewing techniques, with plenty of coffee to taste.

Nothing here involves a plantation. If you want to see coffee growing, the closest option on this site is the hiking day in Minca above Santa Marta; the classic farm landscape is around Salento.

On a cruise stop

Cruise ships call at Cartagena regularly, mostly during the cooler months in North America, and stay for the day. The cruise harbour lies about 3 km south-east of the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A two-hour tasting leaves time for a walk through the walled city, but add a margin for the taxi back to the ship.

Two reviewers had their tasting cancelled

Among the critical reviews, two guests report that the session did not take place: one learned on arrival that it was cancelled, another had it cancelled once and then found no host there on the second booking. Most guests describe a well-run session, but if your day is tightly planned, confirm the time with the operator the day before. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the start.

What guests say about the Cartagena tasting

The tasting itself gets good comments. The two critical reviews are about sessions that were cancelled or where the host did not appear, not about the coffee.

“A fantastic coffee workshop in Cartagena! We learned a lot about coffee beans, their origins, and different flavor profiles. We were also shown various brewing techniques and, of course, got to taste plenty of delicious coffee. …”

“Cancelled the first time. And activity provider didn’t show the second time… I was looking forward to this experience and my travels around this, frustrating. Would not advise doing this activity.”
